Fruita Historic District

Fruita is more than just a destination; it’s a living history book. Originally settled by Mormon pioneers, this tiny community thrived by planting thousands of fruit trees in the fertile river bottom. Today, the National Park Service maintains these historic orchards, allowing visitors to walk among the blossoms and even harvest fruit just as the original settlers did over a century ago.

Beyond the orchards, Fruita serves as the primary hub for park visitors. It is home to the Gifford Homestead, the historic one-room schoolhouse, and the park’s only developed campground. Whether you're here to grab a fresh fruit pie, explore the petroglyphs, or launch a hike into the surrounding cliffs, Fruita offers a peaceful, shaded sanctuary amidst the desert heat.
