Canyoneering is one of the most rewarding ways to experience Capitol Reef Country, but it also requires preparation, good judgment, and respect for the landscape. Many slot canyons are located in remote areas where cell service is limited, weather conditions can change rapidly, and emergency assistance may be hours away. Before setting out, research your route, understand the required skill level, check current weather conditions, and make sure you have the appropriate equipment for your adventure.
Flash Flood Awareness
Flash floods are one of the most serious hazards in Utah's slot canyons and can occur with little or no warning, even when skies are clear where you are. Storms many miles away can quickly send dangerous and potentially life-threatening floodwaters through narrow canyons within minutes.
Before entering any slot canyon:
- Check the latest weather forecast and monitor conditions throughout the day.
- Be aware of weather across the entire drainage area, not just your immediate location.
- Never enter a slot canyon if rain or thunderstorms are forecast anywhere within the canyon's drainage area or if a flash flood watch or warning has been issued.
- If you hear rushing water, notice rising water levels, or see signs of an approaching storm, leave the canyon immediately if it is safe to do so.
- Never attempt to hike, swim, or drive through floodwaters.
