The gateway to red rock adventure and starry nights

About Lyman

The quaint rural community of Lyman Utah has a population of 230 and is nestled at the foot of Thousand Lake Mountain, at an elevation of 7,300 feet. The small ranching and farming community, located just three miles east of Loa, was originally settled in 1876 as Wilmouth. The town was relocated and renamed in 1893 to honor LDS apostle Francis Lyman, who eventually succeeded Brigham Young Jr. as President of the Quorum of Twelve. Lyman has the shortest growing season in Wayne County. Visitors to the area enjoy fishing and hunting at Horse Valley and Neff’s Reservoir.

Things to do in Lyman Utah

FREMONT RIVER CORRIDOR Running right through the heart of Wayne County, the Fremont River winds past Lyman through cottonwood-lined banks and open ranchland. The river offers quiet spots for fishing, wildlife watching, and simply soaking in the kind of pastoral scenery that feels worlds away from the crowded Utah parks to the north and south.

HIGHWAY 24 SCENIC ACCESS Lyman sits along Highway 24 — the main artery through Capitol Reef Country — putting visitors within a short drive of Capitol Reef National Park and the Waterpocket Fold, one of North America's most dramatic geological features. It's an ideal stopping point for road trippers making the run between Richfield and Torrey.

SMALL TOWN, BIG SKIES Lyman is the kind of place where Wayne County's agricultural roots are still very much alive. A handful of local lodging options and nearby dining make it a peaceful basecamp for exploring the surrounding canyon country — and after dark, the absence of city lights means some of the best stargazing in the state is right outside your door.
