Stargazing in Capitol Reef––An International Dark Sky Park

Star Gazing – Capitol Reef Country

This map shows some great places to check out the night sky near Capitol Reef National Park

Capitol Reef National Park, in the heart of Utah’s stunning red rock country, offers a unique stargazing experience that extends far beyond its daytime beauty. It’s a place where the night sky takes center stage, thanks to its designation as an International Dark Sky Park. Here’s a breakdown of what that means:

The Importance of Dark Skies
Preserving a Natural Resource:
  • Light pollution, which is the excessive and misdirected artificial light can obscure our view of the stars; however, Capitol Reef’s Dark Sky Park status signifies a commitment to preserving the natural darkness.

  • This preservation allows visitors to experience the night sky as it has been for millennia.

Ecological Balance:
  • Darkness is vital for the health of ecosystems. Many nocturnal animals rely on natural darkness for survival, navigation, and reproduction.

  • Reducing light pollution helps protect these creatures and maintain ecological balance.

Human Health and Inspiration:

  • The awe-inspiring beauty of a star-filled night sky has captivated countless generations, fostering a sense of wonder and connection to the universe, and there are few places better than Capitol Reef National Park and the surrounding area to experience this spectacle.

Capitol Reef’s Dark Sky Experience:

Exceptional Stargazing:

  • Capitol Reef’s remote location and minimal artificial light create ideal conditions for stargazing.

  • Visitors can witness the Milky Way’s brilliance, observe constellations, and even spot distant planets.

  • Consider bringing a pair of binoculars, a spotting scope, or a good lense for your camera to get a closer, more detailed view.

International Dark Sky Association Recognition:
  • The International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) recognizes and certifies places that demonstrate exceptional commitment to dark sky preservation.

  • Capitol Reef’s designation highlights its efforts to minimize light pollution and provide outstanding stargazing opportunities.

Community Involvement:
  • It is important to note that the surrounding community of Torrey Utah has also been designated an international dark sky community. This allows for a great area to experience the night sky.

Viewing Location Ideas:

There are three official International Dark Sky Designated areas in Capitol Reef Country (Goblin Valley, Torrey, and Capitol Reef National Park).
  • Torrey Utah itself and the outskirts of town are great viewing areas.
  • Goblin Valley State Park makes a good night sky star viewing experience.
  • Silver Spire
  • Cathedral Valley
  • Inside Capitol Reef National Park itself.
  • Boulder Mountain, Thousand Lakes Mountain, and the Henry Mountains all make good higher elevation viewing areas.
