The High Alpine Gem

Crystal Water and Ancient Roots.

Escape the desert heat at 9,000 feet, where deep sapphire waters meet the ancient legends of the Fishlake National Forest.

Utah’s Premier High-Elevation Escape

Fish Lake

Fishlake National Forest stands as a majestic high-altitude crown jewel, rising nearly 9,000 feet above the surrounding desert floor. While the region is often associated with sun-scorched red rocks, this sprawling sanctuary is defined by the deep, sapphire waters of Utah’s largest natural mountain lake and the lush, emerald canopy of the Pando aspen grove. This massive ecosystem creates a dramatic contrast of landscapes—where the cool, whispering leaves of ancient timber and sprawling meadows of wildflowers replace the heat of the canyonlands, offering a serene retreat for families and explorers alike.

Life at the lake is built on generations of tradition, where the scent of pine needles and campfire smoke fills the crisp mountain air. Whether you are waking up in a tent to the sound of the breeze through the aspens or sharing a meal on a cabin deck overlooking the water, this is a place where time slows down, inviting visitors to trade the fast pace of the valley for a slower, more meaningful connection with the wild.

Things to Do

The High Plateau Experience

Fish Lake is a hub for high-altitude recreation, offering a perfect blend of relaxation and mountain adventure.
  • Autumn Gold: Witness the stunning transformation of the surrounding aspen forests. In late September, the Pando grove and surrounding hillsides turn a uniform, brilliant gold, making it a premier destination for photography and leaf-peeping.

  • Waterfront Recreation: Beyond the fishing, the lake is a playground for boaters. Rent a pontoon for a family picnic on the water, or explore the quiet, glass-calm inlets by kayak or paddleboard in the early morning.

  • Wildlife Viewing: Keep your binoculars ready for the "locals." The high plateau is a sanctuary for elk, mule deer, and moose, while the skies are frequently patrolled by bald eagles and osprey hunting near the shoreline.

Logistics

Know Before
You Go

Fishlake National Forest is a high-altitude retreat where a little preparation goes a long way. While the lakeside mercantiles offer basic essentials, we recommend stocking up on groceries and fuel in the valley communities before you head up the plateau. Once you're at the lake, cell service is notoriously spotty; while you might find faint signals near the lodge boosters or limited Wi-Fi at a couple of the resorts, it is often unreliable. Plan to have your maps downloaded and your logistics settled before the ascent.

Fees There is no fee to enter the National Forest or visit the Pando grove. However, a small day-use fee (typically $5) is required at developed boat launches and specific picnic areas. Most federal interagency passes, such as the America the Beautiful pass, are accepted and cover these costs.
Preparation At 9,000 feet, the atmosphere is thin and weather moves quickly. Even on clear days, apply sunscreen frequently to prevent high-altitude burns and stay hydrated to combat the dry mountain air. If you are heading out on the water, be aware that afternoon winds can create sudden, choppy conditions.
