The Gateway to the Red Rock

75 Miles of Geological Wonder
The lifeblood of Capitol Reef Country, Highway 24 is one of America’s most spectacular scenic drives. Spanning 75 miles from the lush Fremont River valley to the jagged mesas of the eastern desert, this route cuts directly through the heart of the Waterpocket Fold, offering front-row seats to millions of years of geologic upheaval.
A thriving oasis in the high desert.

Highway 24

Utah’s Highway 24 isn't just a road; it’s a journey through time. Starting in the high-country "Green Belt" of Loa and Bicknell, the road follows the winding path of the Fremont River, passing through peaceful ranching communities and the unique marshlands of Bicknell Bottoms. As you head east toward Torrey, the landscape shifts dramatically. The soft green meadows give way to the towering red Wingate sandstone cliffs that mark the western gateway of Capitol Reef National Park.

Once inside the park boundaries, Highway 24 becomes a gallery of natural wonders. You’ll weave through the massive rock "fins" of the Waterpocket Fold, passing iconic landmarks like Chimney Rock, The Castle, and the historic orchards of Fruita. Beyond the park, the road spills out into the grey-and-purple "moonscape" of the Mancos Shale badlands near Caineville and Hanksville, where the horizon is dominated by the massive monolith of Factory Butte.

More Things To Do

  • Panorama Point: A must-stop for a 360-degree vista of the park. It's one of the best spots for star photography and seeing the "wrinkle" of the earth's crust.

  • Hickman Bridge: The most popular trailhead located directly off the highway. A moderate 1.8-mile hike leads you to a massive 133-foot natural bridge.

  • Behunin Cabin: Visit the tiny stone home of a pioneer family of 15 to truly understand the grit required to settle this rugged landscape.
