Teasdale, Utah

Teasdale, Utah, offers a tranquil haven where the vast high desert landscape meets the dramatic geology of Utah's red rock country.

About Teasdale

At 7,146 feet elevation, Teasdale Utah lies at the foothills of the northern slope of Boulder Mountain, overlooking the colorful ridges of Capitol Reef National Park. The town was established in 1870 at the intersection of Bulberry Creek and the Fremont River, and is named for LDS Apostle George Teasdale, a member of the Quorum of Twelve. The tiny, unincorporated community has a post office, fire station, restaurant and multiple lodging options. The offices of the Dixie National Forest Services are also located here. There are no gas stations or grocery stores, however the town location is just off of Highway 24, about five miles southwest of the gateway town of Torrey, makes it a convenient base for exploring Capitol Reef National Park, Rabbit Valley and nearby attractions. Local sites include the Cultural Hall, built in 1917 with local red rock and modeled after the Temple Square Tabernacle in Salt Lake City; and the historic Nielson Grist Mill.

History of Teasdale Utah

Hanksville was first settled in 1882 and called “Grave’s Valley” after a member of the Powell expeditions. The settlement, which lies at an elevation of 4300 feet, was renamed Hanksville in 1885 for Mormon pioneer leader Ebenezer Hanks. Agriculture and mining were the primary roles of the community but outlaws such as Butch Cassidy and his Wild Bunch often came to Hanksville for supplies while hiding out in the nearby canyons. Hanksville was also a main supplier for uranium prospectors in the 1940s and 50s. Hanksville’s uranium and gold booms have long since ended, but the area is still rich in dinosaur fossils which are frequently uncovered at the Hanksville-Burpee Quarry. Seven miles from Hanksville, the Mars Desert Research Station is a testing area to explore similarities in the terrain between Earth and the Red Planet. Crew and equipment simulation tests occur during the winter months. The BLM also keeps offices in Hanksville.
